Clinical Study on the Effect of Augmentin^(¢ç)

Abstract
Augmentin¢ç is a formulation of amoxycillin trihydrate and potassium clavulanate. Clavulanate is p oduced by fermentation of streptomyces clavuligerus and it inhibits the action of j3-lactamase which is produced by bacteria resistant to penicillin and cephalosporin. The j3-lactamase is responsible for the mist of resistance of bacteria to penicillin and cephalosporin.
The, presence of clavulanate extends the spectrum of amoxycillin by inhibiting the j3-lactamase p oducing strains of bacteria-such as Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Hemophyllus influenzae, Salmonel a, E. Coli.
Forty five patients were selected in otorhinolaryngological field from Nov. 1985 to May 1986. Cult e materials were taken from each of the patients and they were sent for culture and sensitivity test agai st antibiotics including Augmentin¢ç. Thereafter Augmentin¢ç was administered orally for several days a, d the effects were evaluated.
Among 45 cases of patients, chronic otitis media were 14 cases, acute otitis media were 9 cases, seri 9 s otitis media were 5 cases, external otitis was 1 case, acute tonsillitis were 5 cases, chronic paranasal sinusi i¢¥s were 5 cases, acute paranasal sinusitis were 1 case, and neck abscess were 2 cases.
Twenty eight cases were culture positive (11 S. auteus, 5 P. aeruginosa, 5 Streptococcus virida s, 1 coagulase negative Staphylococcus, 1 homolytic Streptococcus, 1 Proteus mirabilis, 1 Bacillus and 1 Citrobacter diversus) and 17 cases were culture negative. All cases of culture positive bacteria were sensitive to Augmentin¢ç on disc culture sensitivity test except two cases of P. aeruginosa and one case of S. aureus.
The effects of treatment with Augmentin¢ç were subgrouped as effective, part effective, and not effective. Thirty cases were subgrouped as effective, 12 cases were subgrouped as part effective, and 3 cas. were subgrouped as not effective.
There was no side effects of Augmentin¢ç except three cases who complained gastrointestinal sym itorn such as nausea or vomiting.
